Welcome,
Thank you for your interest in the Team-Based Learning Institute at Vancouver Island University. This project is designed to support university faculty through a complete implementation of the Larry K. Michaelsen TBL Model of teaching in the Spring 2016 semester.

A limited number of seats are available for guests (i.e., instructors not currently on the faculty or teaching staff of Vancouver Island University). Guest fees are $375 (CAD), which cover the two-day workshop (8:30 AM – 3:30 PM), a light breakfast lunch for the two workshop days, consultations and feedback on course design by veteran TBL practitioners, and a copy of Getting Started with Team-Based Learning (Sibley and Ostafichuk).

Schedule of the events
Before December 9: selection of readings, which will be distributed electronically
December 9: Day One, 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
December 10: Independent work (3-4 hours) to begin designing a course using TBL
December 11: Day Two: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM

If you require accommodations for staying in Nanaimo during the TBL Institute, we can provide you with a list of hotels that are convenient to campus as well as to ferries and seaplanes. Meanwhile, if you have questions about travel or administrative details, please contact Stephanie Didsbury at stephanie.didsbury@viu.ca or at (250) 740-6167. If you have questions about this registration page, or about the program, itself, please contact Bill Roberson at bill.roberson@viu.ca.

practice designing TBL-type application activities
re-design a course outline (syllabus) for a TBL course, including appropriate policies and grading schemes. Day Two of the Institute focuses on whole-course design within the TBL framework.
receive feedback on the new design and course outline
receive feedback on TBL lesson plans

Los of new features in the Lates Blackboard Collaborate Upgrade

http://www.blackboard.com/online-collaborative-learning/blackboard-collaborate-features.aspx

7 Ways of Using Blackboard Collaborate Ideas for Using Collaborate

these are ways I could use Blackboard Collaborate in my online course

1. Live Instruction

Studies show that the ideal solution is a blended learning model with asynchronous and synchronous interaction.

2. Meetings

With Blackboard Collaborate, you can easily and effectively host effective meetings, significantly reducing teleconferencing and travel costs and decreasing time away from job.

3. Asynchronous Content Development

With Blackboard Collaborate, you can create asynchronous content using Blackboard Collaborate’s interactive record and playback functionality. With voice authoring capabilities, your  can create a more engaging and effective asynchronous environment by adding a voice component that facilitates vocal instruction, collaboration, personalized coaching, and assessment. Easy podcasting allows instructors to create instant lectures and notes, while voice recordings provide thoughtful, quick feedback to students.

  1. Tutoring Programs

Whether provided by instructors or peers, tutoring via Blackboard Collaborate web conferencing offers students an opportunity to work one-on-one to get questions answered or receive help with homework or other assignments. Sessions can be scheduled, or students can drop into to an existing virtual room to connect with the tutor.

  2. Classroom Collaboration

Collaboration at a distance connects students from different locations and cultures to enhance the learning experience.

  3. Virtual Office Hours

Teachers can extend the hours they are available to their students with Blackboard Collaborate virtual office hours. Meet one-on-one or with groups of students.

  1. Virtual Field Trips/Remote Guest Speakers

Online education is all about creating engaging learning environments. Blackboard Collaborate enables you to bring in remote experts to the classroom or send students on a virtual field trip. For example, students at Union County Public Schools viewed a surgery in real time and visited with the cast of the musical Rent.

TT 1551Example of Social Media

via MarketingProfs Today: Online Reviews | Facebook Targets Next Billion Users | Personalization Pitfalls | News Content.

This is an example of a RSS feed I subscribe to in order to keep up with trends in marketing. Although I teach in the area of communication, I find that there are many aspects of marketing that can be applied to an individual’s brand. As part of my Public Speaking for Professionals course, learners undertake mock job search assignment where they have to locate a position they are qualified for and submit a cover letter and resume for that position. then they  conduct a mock interview with another student to role play an selection interview.

Course: COMM101: Public Speaking An example of ready made content

via Course: COMM101: Public Speaking.

This example of ready made content would be a way to build a way for students to navigate through  the normal topics of a public speaking course. The basics of making successful speeches are not that difficult to understand. the important part in developing presentation competence is the guided practice that occurs when learners listen to their peer’s speeches and present their own.

This course could fit with my notions of pedagogy because i is clear and straightforward and moves through the important aspects a basic speech course. I like that it covers motivation and communication apprehension easy in the course and then hits listening before it starts with constructing speeches. Listening is often the vital communication skills that is never considered. But without an understanding of the listening process it is difficult to become an accomplished speaker.
